Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center

The Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center project required an HVAC enclosure solution capable of supporting a large, modern medical facility. Contractors selected FläktGroup SEMCO AT‑PANEL and MD‑PANEL Solutions to provide structural integrity, acoustic control, and efficient installation. The completed system supports the center’s extensive dedicated outdoor air system and large ductwork requirements.

Key Facts

  • Construction began in 2011
  • Over 67,000 sq. ft. of AT‑PANEL and MD‑PANEL Solutions supplied
  • HVAC system includes a 100% dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS)
  • DOAS incorporates 21 wheels, each 14 feet in diameter
  • Six free‑standing wheel enclosures made of AT‑PANEL Solutions
  • Ductwork constructed using MD‑PANEL Solutions measuring 162 x 72 inches
  • Two plenums built (100 ft and 175 ft long)
  • Plenums assembled in five days using 14 chain falls
  • Panels available in 2–6 inch thicknesses
  • Panels arrive pre‑insulated with 4‑inch insulation
  • Facility totals 947,000 sq. ft., seven stories, and over 100 beds
  • 60% larger than previous medical center

Challenge

Provide durable, large‑scale HVAC panel enclosures capable of supporting a complex energy‑recovery design for a major medical center.

Solution

FläktGroup SEMCO AT‑PANEL and MD‑PANEL Solutions were used to construct wheel enclosures, ductwork, plenums, and an intermediate acoustic deck. The panels’ pre‑insulated construction, tongue‑and‑groove design, and numbered “construction by numbers” system reduced installation time and complexity. FläktGroup SEMCO supported the project with conference calls, detailed assembly drawings, and job‑specific coordination.

Results

  • Reduced installation time due to pre‑insulated panels
  • Simplified assembly using tongue‑and‑groove joints
  • Accurate, efficient installation facilitated by numbered panels and detailed documentation
  • Provided structural integrity and low leakage to support the energy‑recovery HVAC design
  • Supported opening of a 947,000 sq. ft. medical center in April 2016
“Our team selected FläktGroup SEMCO enclosures because they offered a superior product at a competitive price. The FläktGroup SEMCO enclosure system offers excellent structural integrity which will support the low leakages required by the energy recovery design.”
