The Phoenix Design Group designed a mechanical system for a new surgical suite requiring precise temperature and humidity control. They selected the FläktGroup SEMCO Pinnacle system to meet the low-temperature, low-humidity requirements. The approach provided the environmental conditions needed for surgical comfort, efficiency, and safety.
Key Facts
- New surgical suite at Floyd Medical Center
- Location: Rome, Georgia
- Required space conditions: 62°F and 45% relative humidity
- Required dew point: 41°F
- Outdoor air volume: 9,611 cfm
- Return air volume: 5,000 cfm
- Supply air volume: 8,500 cfm
- Pinnacle system uses a total energy wheel, cooling coil, and passive dehumidification wheel
Challenge
The surgical suite required very low temperatures and humidity levels that could not be achieved with conventional chilled water equipment. Traditional systems would have required overcooling and reheating, along with a special glycol chiller operating in the 30°F range. Maintaining low dew points was essential to prevent condensation, avoid bacterial growth, and ensure surgeon comfort.
Solution
The Phoenix Design Group installed a dual-wheel FläktGroup SEMCO Pinnacle primary ventilation system that pre‑treats 100% outside air. The system includes a supply fan, exhaust fan, total energy wheel, cooling coil, and passive dehumidification wheel. These components work together to reduce both latent and sensible loads before air reaches the main air handler or VAV boxes.
Results
The Pinnacle system enabled the surgical suite to meet required low‑temperature, low‑humidity conditions without relying on oversized or specialized chillers. The design reduced the need for overcooling and reheating and allowed higher discharge air temperatures, contributing to improved operational efficiency. The system enhanced environmental control, supporting surgical comfort and functionality.
“It’s a really good economic decision for a hospital. I think there is a positive return, but we sometimes must compete with medical technology.”
